[ Steam Game ] Transistor

Transistor is a science fiction game, and its plot takes place in an imaginary city called Cloudbank. It has one main character called Red who used to be a famous singer in Cloudbank. She was to be asssasinated by a group called Camerata, but she survives and comes into possession of a great sword called Transistor. It was buried into the chest of an unknown man who seems to have been close with Red.  His consciousness and voice were absorbed into the Transistor itself with Red’s voice. Red travels with the transistor, talking to it, and the Camerata continues to pursue them with an army of robotic intelligences known as the process.

3 days diary

I played Transistor for days, it felt like I really became Red and travelled with Transistor, fighting the process and finding more and more clues about Red’s past life. Even though it is one player game with no interaction with other players, I didn’t feel like playing alone because the voice of the transistor guided me through every stages of games. And as the story unfolded itself, it felt like I was unraveling a hidden mystery. Also the game didn’t feel like a game, but rather like watching a movie. That’s because there are moments in game that shows the motion / past of character in a cinematic way.

After some days I totally adjusted to the unique gaming method of Transistor, and found a break points in the game where player can take a break. From break point to break point the objects vary, but in one place I like, there are a hammock, a beach ball, and a music player. If the user gets close to such objects, the user can experience virtual sleep, play with the ball, and even listen to game ost in a similar fashion to real life music listening. I spent some time in that spot even though in there there’s no monsters to kill or plot advancement, because I liked the atmosphere of that place. Because the experience was similar to that of real life, I felt more attached to it.

Though I didn’t see the ending of the game yet, I think I can safely say that this game has a unique and special quality to it that makes players keep returning to it even after they see the ending unlike other story based games. The voice talking to the player gives player the feeling of intimacy and adds flavor to the overall game play.

#4 wk 3 Reading Summary

1. Gaver,W. Technology Affordances –

The text talks of a notion called affordance. Affordance is about affording people to do something. Say, something that leads people to do certain action. Thus affordances imply the complementarity of the acting and the acted-upon environment. Affordance exists regardless of whether you perceive it or not.

Perceptible affordances are inter-referential. In this, the actual perception of affordances will be determined by oneself’s culture, social setting, experience and intentions. Sequential affordances are acting on a perceptible affordance that leads to information indicating new affordances; Nested affordances describe affordances that are grouped in space.

As affordance is an important element in design, it was interesting to read and learn more about it. What was interesting was that the perception of affordances will differ according to one’s cultural, social background and experience & intentions. Even though two people are looking at the same thing, they might afford to do different action because of such differences in background.

2. Norman, D.A. Affordances –

The text talks about affordance, and how it differs from constraints. The difference is can be observed best in physical products, rather than in screen based products. That is because in screen based products, what is visible on the screen is not affordance but visual feedback that support the affordances, and thus rather than affordance, it is closer to constraints.

The text was really interesting in that I could learn the difference between affordance and constraints, and learn more about the nature of design in screen based products. I learned that I’ve been misunderstanding the word affordance so far, and I think in that respect this paper was very informative.

 What is my favorite work?

My favorite work is short animation film I did for Time, Motion and Communication class. The reason I like it is because it is the first animation film I made. I drew everything from tree to water, and it was a fun and amazing experience in that I could see what I only imagined in my mind come alive and tell a story. Although it is not as perfect as I hoped it to be, I feel tremendous affection for it at that it is first animation I made in a style I like.

#1 wk 1 Personal Statement

10604734_10205104401310834_5142557441057986193_o

Nowadays I find myself thinking a lot about life in general. That’s probably because at current stage of life I feel like I’m waiting for the end of the world that I’ve known so far and the start of something completely new.

Previously in my life I had many chances to make changes in direction of life. In middle school years I chose to give up going to art related high school, but instead chose to enter foreign language high school, and in high school I went back on my previous decision and chose to study design in Yonsei University. In my freshman year I participated in movie making club and during that time I dreamt of becoming a movie director. In my sophomore and junior years I gave up on that dream and chose to focus more on design and went out to participate in corporate projects and outside competitions. Looking back, I think the reason I could make so many changes in direction in life was because I thought such changes wouldn’t really be permanent. And they really weren’t. However nowadays I feel very hesitant about making a decision on future direction of life because for some reason I feel like, the decision that I have to make this time would be very important and very definite.

For that reason nowadays I’m thinking a lot about which direction to take for my future job. In my mind there are two general direction, first one being having a design related job right after graduation, and second one going to graduate school to study film (real life / animation). It is clear that I want to do something art related in my life, but in choosing which form that would be, I’m having a hard time now. For this reason, this semester through this class I want to learn more in depth about interaction design and seriously think about whether I can do this for significant amount of time in my life.
